I've come this close ---><--- to shooting at those monsters with a .22, or maybe a .410... A couple of times .300WinMag didn't seem excessive.
Discharging a firearm within city limits isn't that big of a deal, right? Certainly not compared to being woke up every dang day at 5:30.

I hates woodpeckers.

"Woodpeckers are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act as migratory, non game birds."

According to the Colorado DOW site (http://wildlife.state.co.us/Wildlife.../TooClose2.htm):
These birds are protected by law. There are a number of techniques you can use to discourage their activities.
  • Provide an alternative drumming site. Nail two boards together at just one end (producing resonation) and hang on a secure surface.
  • Place lightweight plastic mesh netting at least 3 inches from affected wood areas.
  • Nail plywood over the excavated area.
  • Hang aluminum foil strips, colored plastic streamers, hawk silhouettes or mirrors near the affected wood.
  • Treat wood with sticky/tacky repellent. However, be aware these repellents may stain house siding.
  • Use noise-making tactics, such as clapping your hands or banging garbage can lids together.
  • Spray the birds gently with water from a garden hose when they start to drill or drum.
  • Eliminate any ledges or cracks on which the woodpecker is able to stand while drumming.
  • Don't feed birds.
If woodpeckers continue to be a problem, a special permit can be obtained from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to destroy the birds.

So I guess the 40 million PSI super-duper-magnum washer for the car would not qualify as "gently spray"-ing the birds? hehe.

Sounds like "protected" just means you can't kill them. I didn't see anything in that pamphlet about water boarding though.

It's all a matter of perspective though, isn't it?

Ha Ha! I love that idea. I can tell from experience and so can all the other residents in our neighborhood, all those 'recommended' techniques to rid yourself of the peckers, do not work.
