He served honorably as a Marine. That's all that I can say.

Okay, I'll give him some points for his time as a Marine, but somewhere along the way he seemed to forget what it was to look out for others and about PUBLIC service, not self-service.

Clears the ways for someone better to take the office. It would be nice if a TRUE Conservative (versus a Neo-Con) could get into that office.

As TroublCo said, I can't claim to be broken up about it but my prayers go to his family.

+1. Seems to happen a lot. Look what happened to Randy "Duke" Cunningham.

So, he came back from Vietnam bitter against the government and took an office that he chose to never leave. The guy was 77. He should have retired YEARS ago.

On Saturday, he apparently JUST broke the record of the longest serving member of Congress from PA. Like most broken records, he didn't break it by much!

I'll honor the service, I'm obligated. Never the name, never the man and little to nothing he stood for since ~1975. No tears here.

"...and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood." - John "Jack" Murtha on the conduct of Marines in Haditha.

Murtha ridiculed Dick Cheney for not serving in the military and chided him for his "5 deferments". I don't recall him ever criticizing Bill Clinton, BHO or any other democrat for not serving.

He claimed in his book he served in Korea...he never did. His two Purple Hearts are surrounded by controversy and there are some pretty credible claims by a very close friend and colleague in congress (Don Bailey-PA) that the (extremely minor) injuries he sustained (scratches and bruising at worst) were fabricated for political gain.

Personally, I don't believe military service is always done for honorable reasons (uummmm...think John Kerry) and just because someone served doesn't make them honorable or give them a pass for their actions (Malik Nadal Hasan). I think he's one of the very few "former" Marines. I'll never forgive him or forget how he treated those guys from Haditha.

Good riddance to "cut n run" Murtha. Maybe our country got a little safer today.
